Enigma aims to bring greater utility to blockchain by increasing privacy. The Enigma protocol introduces private smart contracts called "secret contracts"​, that enable computations on encrypted data, and use the blockchain infrastructure for payment distribution and other functions. Enigma is taking on one of the central problems facing blockchain, maintaining data privacy while meeting the rapidly growing scaling requirements of decentralized networks. Enigma tries to solve this problem by introducing a second layer network for computations. By using secret contracts that allow nodes to process data, sensitive proprietary data can be protected, while maintaining the other benefits of storing data on a blockchain.

SONM is a decentralized fog computing platform, in which a decentralized network is formed from individual computing devices. SOMN wants to create a multi-purpose computational power markertplace, based on smart contracts, where users can rent out computing power that they are not using. They are also developing an IT infrastructure, that will be powered by the SNM token, that will offer a variety of blockchain related services needed to set up a decentralized application.
