What problem does this service solve?

Enigma's goal is to bring more privacy to blockchains. Enigma's protocol uses private smart contracts to perform computations on encrypted data. The Internet Computer is designed to extend the existing capabilities of the internet, so that it can also be used as a global computing platform that can replace the private infrastructure that is currently used by internet systems and services.

Company Description

Enigma aims to bring greater utility to blockchain by increasing privacy. The Enigma protocol introduces private smart contracts called "secret contracts", that enable computations on encrypted data, and use the blockchain infrastructure for payment distribution and other functions. Enigma is taking on one of the central problems facing blockchain, maintaining data privacy while meeting the rapidly growing scaling requirements of decentralized networks. Enigma tries to solve this problem by introducing a second layer network for computations. By using secret contracts that allow nodes to process data, sensitive proprietary data can be protected, while maintaining the other benefits of storing data on a blockchain.

The Internet Computer ICP coin is the cryptocurrency that powers the decentralized computing platform created by DFINITY. The network aims to be the world’s first blockchain computing network that runs at the same speed as the internet. The Internet Computer ICP protocol is designed to enable smart contract execution, data storage, and computation on a large scale. The project's software frameworks give developers a revolutionary new way to build tokenized internet services.
The Internet Computer was founded in October 2016 by Dominic Williams, who is the chief scientist of DFINITY. The company raised a total of $121 million from contributors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Polychain Capital, SV Angel, Aspect Ventures, Electric Capital, ZeroEx, Scalar Capital, and Multicoin Capital, as well as several prominent Ethereum supporters. In 2018, over 50,000 early participants received ICP utility tokens in an airdrop. On December 18, 2020, DFINITY launched the alpha mainnet of the Internet Computer. In a final step towards decentralization, on May 10, 2021, DFINITY launched the Internet Computer into the public domain. This major milestone means that the internet now functions as a decentralized global computer — marked by the release of all of the Internet Computer’s source code into the public domain, as well as ICP utility token allowing tens of thousands of community members to govern the Internet Computer network.
